My Anime List

Chuuta Kokonose is an orphan who lives with his aunt. For as long as he can remember, he’s had a voice in his head, but other than that he’s a normal boy—right until the day when a strange-looking thing follows him home and teleports him to a place filled with more fantastic creatures. It’s a space police station, and Rein Brickke, the Chief of Solar System Department, tells him that he’s been chosen by the computer as a possible candidate to join the police force. Misuzu Sonokata, a girl from Chuuta’s school with an angelic face and ill temper who turns out to be one of Rein Brickke’s subordinates, doesn’t think him suitable for such a job. Chuuta, who was shocked at first, decides to take the aptitude test after being urged by the voice in his head and to prove Misuzu wrong.

elDLIVE is a series that I watched during the Winter Season 2017, in the same time as ACCA 13-Territory Inspection Dept., Saga of Tanya the Evil, Chain Chronicle: the Light of Haecceitias, Nanbaka 2017 and Spiritpact. I like the series, in fact I enjoyed it quite much, but maybe not as much as ACCA, Tanya the Evil or Chain Chronicle.

In this series we followed the daily life of a young and insecure junior high student, Kokonose Chuuta, after he join the group elDLIVE, the space police. Right away we feel thing will not be easy for him due to his insecurity, Chuuta his not even sure if he is fit for the job and he is close to give up more than once. However with the good word of Drew a Monitalian (alien) that his squatting Chuuta body, he found the courage to fight his opponent and win his fight. I must admit, everything about it is quite predictable, I mean of course Chuuta will win at the end of the episode, he is the main focus of the series.

Chuuta is not alone, as I said, his body is the host of an alien, Drew the Monitalian, that cute little thing that look like a cat, only appear to Chuuta and only the young man can ear him. Which cause misunderstanding more than once and give us our dose of humor. Obviously, Chuuta and Drew are not the only character of the series, our awkward duo is surrounded by the way to serious Sonotaka Misuzu, the ultra sexy chief Brick Laine (voice by Tatsuhisa Suzuki whom also voice Takao from Kuroko no Basuke and Makoto from Free!), the perverted Doctor Taklamakan Strange Love and a bunch of other character with some annoying one. I don’t know if it’s different in the manga, but no matter how many character they added, Chuuta doesn’t really change, he remain insecure all the series without improvement until the last episode where I could start to feel some change in him since he almost lost Drew for good. Cause yes Monitalian doesn’t stay forever with their host, when their host lost confidence in themselves, when they seems to hit the bottom of the barrel, Monitalian are fading and comeback only when their host gain back some confidence or when the host is about to died. It happen in several occasion, one happen more than the other, I’ll let you guess which one.

On the story side, there is not much to say, it’s pretty much always the same thing that happen, a bad alien escape or a group try to destroy the Earth and the space police need to stop them, nothing really change.

That series have a lot of flaws, but I still enjoy it, it’s certainly not the best of the season, but it have good element, like when Chuuta overcome his insecurity, it would have been nice if they would have developed it more. Hopefully they will comeback with another season where Chuuta gain more confidence BUT doesn’t lose it after, I feel like the main point of the story was to watch Chuuta gain more and more confidence, overcome his insecurity, but it doesn’t happen. They had a decent antagonist with Demille, they could work more around that. Plus, Chuuta lost friend, friend that supposed to by death, might all be alive somewhere in the universe, according to one who found his way back to Earth, but not for the good reason. With that they could probably go somewhere. I like the series, the story and the character, but it could have been better if they had work more on Chuuta.

  1. This show is what I have planned to watch since the start of 2017. It seemed to catch my interest, but reading your review just gave me a second thought. I will still give it a try. I might have different views though. Thanks for sharing your review. Cheers! 🙂
