In the year 2022, virtual reality has progressed by leaps and bounds, and a massive online role-playing game called Sword Art Online (SAO) is launched. With the aid of “NerveGear” technology, players can control their avatars within the game using nothing but their own thoughts.

Kazuto Kirigaya, nicknamed “Kirito,” is among the lucky few enthusiasts who get their hands on the first shipment of the game. He logs in to find himself, with ten-thousand others, in the scenic and elaborate world of Aincrad, one full of fantastic medieval weapons and gruesome monsters. However, in a cruel turn of events, the players soon realize they cannot log out; the game’s creator has trapped them in his new world until they complete all one hundred levels of the game.

In order to escape Aincrad, Kirito will now have to interact and cooperate with his fellow players. Some are allies, while others are foes, like Asuna Yuuki, who commands the leading group attempting to escape from the ruthless game. To make matters worse, Sword Art Online is not all fun and games: if they die in Aincrad, they die in real life. Kirito must adapt to his new reality, fight for his survival, and hopefully break free from his virtual hell.

About a ago, I posted my first impression of the series, now that I finished watching the 1st season, it’s time to write a full post about it. When I wrote the first impression post, I said the reason why I wasn’t sure about watching it, was due to the comment about it. While some anime fan really enjoy the series, other hate it. I,m part of the first category, I’m one of those who really enjoyed the 1st season (can’t say about the 2nd since I haven’t watched it yet)

I have to admit that while I read a lot of stuff here and there about the series, I didn’t read the synopsis before hand. I guessed, I wanted to keep the surprise about that, thus I was surprise to see the antagonist of the fist arc, Aincrad Arc, present himself right from the beginning. Normally, it take some episode before knowing who is the villain, like for the second arc, Fairy Dance, while we could all easily guess who it was, it wasn’t confirmed right away. But I think I know the reason why it was made like that, but since I really wanna try to keep this post spoilers free, I will not telling, you gonna have to watch it :p.

One of the reason why I enjoyed watching the 1st season of Sword Art Online, is probably due to its closeness to RPG game. I never played MMORGP, like the one depicted in the anime, but I did played some RPG, the one closer to SAO that I played is probably Rune Frontier Factory. when Kirito, one of the main character, give the stone to make his second sword, the blacksmith only he it the item few time before it transform into a beautiful sword, like in video game, it goes the same way for fishing and cooking, higher your level is, more and better thing you can do.

I also really like how the world where conceive and design, the different floors in the first arc, the difference between the main city or the races in the second and how they all have their own abilities. All those put together make a game I would maybe like to play.

I pretty much enjoyed everything regarding this series, except maybe the second arc, Fairy Dance, I really despise the antagonist of the second arc. To me, he was mere copy of the first arc villain, the one that always lived in the shadow, who is finally getting his chance to “conquer” the world and is just perverted and gross. The antagonist of the Fairy Dance arc is just weak in all meaning of the term.

Now that I’m done with the 1st season, I will definitely watch the 2nd season and when I will able to get my hand on it the movie. Apparently a 3rd season in on its way, a 3rd installment I will for when it will come out
