Inaba Yuushi’s parents died in his first year of middle school, and he moved in with his relatives. Though they did care for him, he could tell he was a burden. After he graduated, he happily prepared to move to a high school with a dormitory. Unfortunately, the dormitory burned to the ground before he could move in! Yuushi doesn’t want to live with his grudging relatives, but it’s rough finding lodging as an orphaned student with little money. He finally finds a room in a nice old building which seems too good to be true.

The catch is that it is a Monster House, a place where humans and supernatural creatures—ghosts, mononoke, etc.—live together. Another high schooler lives there, a cute girl named Akine, and she’s completely unfazed by the monsters. In fact, she can even exorcise evil spirits! Yuushi’s high school life just got much stranger than he ever bargained for!-MAL

Elegant Yokai Apartment Life…Elegant Yokai Apartment…Yokai Apartment, the one anime series from my summer 2017 watch list that I just can’t explain why I enjoyed it. I can do it for the other, the reason why I like the other show on my list are quite simple, it was either cause of the handsome boy (Kastugeki/Touken Ranbu, Saiyuki Reload Blast) the curiosity (Vatican Miracle Examiner) or just for the absurdity of it (Ikemen Sengoku: Bromance Across Time, Clean Freak! Aoyama-Kun)….I cannot say the same for Yokai Apartment…okay this show have a lot of the attributes the other show had, it have handsome boys, it did somehow caught my curiosity and there was some (a lot) absurd moment, however I’m not ready to say those were the reason why I watch it, but it certainly have something to do with it… mostly the cute boy.

To me, Elegant Yokai Apartment Life (I will never understand why the long ass title), is a slice of life, comedy with a supernatural base and a touch of mysteries, gonna have to be honest with you here if I agree with the slice of life, the comedy and the supernatural, I can’t with the mysteries…Scooby Doo Mysteries have more mysteries than Yokai Apartment. There wasn’t any moment where I asked myself “I wonder what will happen next”. That being said I was still curious enough to see if the book the main character got will eventually be useful to something. I had to wait until the episode 25 to see that.

The series is divided in two parts ( I will not use the term arc/chapter here, since the other little story are more like side story). In the first part we learn about the main character (according to MAL there is two main characters, but frankly the second one is really only a support character, Hase does nothing major in the series, he was never the focus of side story, he is only there to give a little push to Inaba when he need it and squatting at the apartment while spoiling Kuri). We follow Inaba through his daily life at school and he see him discovering that world he tried to avoid, then arrive the second part. In this one he get a book called the “Petit Heirozoicon” a magical book containing various supernatural being Inaba can summon ( think of the Clow card but in a book form), although the second part our lead male try to see how that book can be useful and how to use it without destroying everything around him. Regarding that book, it actually brought one of my favorite sidekick character of the year. I really enjoyed seeing Fools going around, he was a good guide to Inaba about how to use the book even if most of the time it ended up in a big mess, he was a funny little guy like Kero-chan.

If I can’t tell you exactly why I enjoyed that series (probably more than I thought), I can tell you what bother me. First there is a lot of character that was beyond useless although the look like they will bring something interesting to the show, they in fact just there to be annoying (looking at you Tashiro) or there was event in the series that could have brought more to the show if it had been written another way. Like that whole story with Yamamoto, I was sure it would turn into something bigger, like Inaba will have to use all his power to save her from some kind of darkness and negativity, but nope nothing it was a big let down, plus all the episode title let us to think something big will happen, some of those were kind of misleading. Also I still can’t figure why that girl attack the hot teacher Chiaki, there was no point of doing that. They made look a lot of event like if they were about to be really significant, but nothing worth to be really remember happened in the end. One thing that would have been really nice is to have more back story, I know the majority of the character were support character, but will still get some back story for them, like Kuri and Shiro and Ruriko but I would have liked to know more about the other resident of the apartment, mainly Ryuu-San who, I was sure, would have play a bigger part in Inaba’s life…oh well. If in the first part of the series the event happening are made to make Inaba Yuushi look the world around him differently, the second part the event were created to give Inaba the opportunity to use the book.

I’m reaching the end of this post and as you probably noticed I compared at some occasion Yokai Apartment to Cardcaptor Sakura, when I start the post I really try to stay away from this since both show doesn’t seems similar, but when I closer at it, I found more parallel to make. Both show structure are kind of similar. In the first part arc of Cardcaptor, the Clow Card arc, Sakura learn to use her new power by running after the card, in the second arc, the Sakura Card, the strange event our magical girl have to face are created in other to make her change the card. Yokai Apartment even have that rich kid who is there to morally support the main character. In the main difference between the two is that Cardcaptor is in my opinion far superior in term of character quality and story than Elegant Yokai Apartment Life…again this is my opinion and you have the right to not be agree.

To conclude, Yokai Apartment could have been way more interesting if the story would have been written in a better way, if the mystery genre would have took a bigger place than the slice of life the show would have probably be better. However I still enjoyed the series, it was a series I could watch without thinking too much about it.

~ Thank you for reading ~

See you next time!!
