Hope you are all doing well today!
As the title suggests, today’s K-Friday post will be an album impression, I would like to say a brand new release, but it’s not the case even if the album in question was released in the second half of 2020.
Episode 1 is the debut album of Ghost9, a boy group signed under Maroo Entertainment. The album was released on the 23rd of September 2020.
- 1- Vision (intro)
- 2 – Think of Dawn
- 3 – Reborn
- 4 – It’s Gonna Be Hot
- 5 – Lay Back
- 6 – Flying at Night
Once thing I don’t usually understand regarding kpop album is the use of intro song, often time they are just filler song, like if they needed to put something in the beginning even if it wasn’t related to the whole album, other time the intro song is just an extension of the first real track (which is normally the lead title) of the album; I have to say that I really don’t like this type of song, I found them useless, I will listen to it once and after I will just skip them. However, Vision is different, while it still feel more like a song intro for the next song on the track, it also feel like a track on its own, it’s just that instead of being a full three minutes song it only 1mins and I have to say that I wouldn’t mind having a full version of Vision, the track does just job right at grabbing your attention right from the start and get your expectation high for the rest of the album.
Think of Dawn
This track is the lead title and the debut song of the group, songs like this need to grab the attention from the first note, if it fails to catch your interest within the first note it will be harder to get into the group. Think of Dawn does a great job as lead and debut song in my opinion, while I’m not normally a fan of the mix of genres in a song cause it hard to execute the produced made this one work, the different parts blend well together.
The next track on the debut album is Reborn, it follows Think of Dawn style, it’s another musical hotpot, but the different part is less defined than with the previous song, this one but the emphasize more on the rap part of the song which is the chorus.
It’s Gonna be Hot
This song, I can’t quite explain it, it is a decent one, it is nice to the ear, nothing harsh, it flows well, the chorus has a nice hook, but I can’t explain it, it’s just a decent song with a catchy chorus.
After a few upbeat, fast paced songs, we need at least one that is more quiet, something relaxing, something dreamy, but not something that will make you fall asleep, something smooth to listen to on a rainy day and that is what Lay Back is. It is definitely not a ballad, but it’s really different from the four tracks that came before.
Flying at Night
This song has one of the most accurate title that I have seen in the kpop word cause that is exactly what I want to do when I listen to this song, Fly. Fly in the night sky, going through the cloud, racing with the bird, looking at the city from above. Flying at Night is a bit more upbeat than Lay Back, but not as fast paced as the other song. It is a fun song to listen to and it concludes this debut album really well.
Ghost9 debuted with a really decent first mini album, Episode 1: Door does the job right at selling the boys and I hope it will continue on that path.
Did you had the chance to listen to the album?
