Hiyori Toono: Solitary Misunderstood Polar Bear

Free! is categorize as a sport anime, it is one of the few that can balance well the Slice of Life genre with the Sport genre. Free! is a slice of life with drama using sport as support, swimming races are often used as trigger to start or finalize a character development. It might be categorized as a sport anime, but drama is worthy of any Slice of Life and became a trademark of this series. Each season as its share of dramatic moments, angst, fight between childhood friend. Free! take the big piece of the cake when it come to lack of communication, miscommunication and misunderstanding. If there is none of that, it cannot be a Free! series.

K: Seven Stories – What Will You Find In It

K: Seven Stories Promotional Poster

Hello everyone!
Today I will talk about something I’m really excited about and the reason why you saw me posting about this series twice in the same month (now third with this present post).

Sometimes ago, the Studio GoHand announced they would be releasing movie(s) related to K I got really excited and even more excited when it was announced as seven movie and that some would be adaptation of either manga or light novel.

The Tale of a Broken Friendship Between a Monkey and a Crow

Back in March, I wrote a post for the “Squad” OWLS tour, the prompt was about friendship and as support for the topic, I decide to go with the anime and manga series, Seraph of the End (Owari no Serafu). I decided focus the post on Guren to show what one can do for their friend(s), even if they shouldn’t be friend with them in first place.

I have to say, I really enjoyed writing this post, not only cause I love the series, but also because of what Guren was ready to do for his friend, in fact, more I was writing the post, more I was liking him and seeing him under a new light (I still have trouble to fully trust him tho)

I was almost done with the post when I thought of and other series I could have used for the March tour. The series I was thinking about, portrayed a really different kind of friendship than seen in Seraph of the End.

Build a Harem tag – Of course I Would Get Tagged One Day

Hi everyone!!
Some of you probably saw it going around, this is a really fun tag game made the amazing Cactus Matt from Anime Q and A, if you didn’t look at the original post you can to it here and click follow at the same times!

I saw this tag going around for a while and I knew I would eventually get it, I knew it was written in the sky. Not only I did get it, but twice. The first come from cool guy Scott from Mechanical Anime Review and the other from the sweet Aria from The Animanga Spellbook.

I have to say that while I knew I would eventually get to answer that tag, I must say that I wasn’t totally looking forward to it, yes it’s a fun tag, but I never sure about the character type (I do feel you pain Aria I really do)

But I think I manage to build my own harem…I think

But first we need to look at the rules cause like every game this one need rules

  • Link back to the original post on Anime QandA so they can check out everyone’s picks!
  • Use the ‘Build A Harem’ logo somewhere in the post.
  • Make sure to mention the person who nominated you too!
  • Pick 5 Anime Characters (any show & any gender) that would be in your ideal harem if you were the main character of a harem anime, explain a little bit as to why they are your picks (if you want).
  • Make sure each character you pick falls into some of the following harem character types: Childhood friend, tom boy/girl, genki girl/boy, loli/shota, trap, tsundere, yandere, kuudere, dandere, etc. (If there’s a character you’ve picked that doesn’t specifically fall into one of these types or falls into multiple types that’s fine too!)
  • Nominate 5 people to participate in this tag!

Did I link back to the original post? Yes twice.
Did I use the “Build A Harem Logo? Yup and it will be the cover picture as well (like the color of that logo)
Did I mention the person who nominated me? Y es and Yes

This was quite easy so far, now we enter the hardest part of the tag game itself…Build the said Harem. Thing you have been much easier if it was anime type (like battle shounen, shoujo, magical girl, fantasy, etc) but I didn’t make the rule so I have to follow them…

Let’s take a look at Mel’s Harem

The childhood friend

Bakugo Katsuki
This is an easy start, I know so far in the anime he is a jerk and a lot of viewer think he will turn evil, but more I’m reading the manga more a realize that Bakugo became the way he is mostly cause of his surrounding. We can totally blame a kid who didn’t receive much guidance. Kacchan might be rude and harsh but he have a clear genuine goal in mind. He might not be the best childhood friend Deku had, but I feel like if Deku would have been his equal from the beginning, Bakugo would have do everything to make sure none of them fall behind. He is not the type to toss away his friend when he get bored, so I doubt he will leave the harem anytime soon.

The Genki Boy

Sawamura Eijun
He is one of the sweetest kid on Earth, a little ball of sunshine who try to always look on the bright side, I know if I have that boy around I will never be sad. Plus he is overly optimistic and have a lot of energy to send…playing…baseball

The Tsundere

Fushimi Saruhiko
I have to add that twisted monkey to my list, but I feel like he would have more his place in a “Build A Army” tag game than a harem…oh well as long as I give him all the attention he is craving and acknowledge how smart and cool he is, I shouldn’t need a leash for him…or maybe yes that could be interesting and leash and collar.

The Megane

This is totally a character type, all anime series have at least one are two beautiful glasses-kun in their cast. I can’t people it was forgotten

Miyuki Kazuya
I know I know, I already have a megane so I could have just but to label at Fushimi, but Fushimi to remove his glasses from time to time, however I’m convinced Miyuki sleep with them.
That being said, he is a nice addition to this Harem we all need a harmless troll in our life.

Last but certainly not least

Aomine Daiki
Of course I can’t build a harem without my God (or demon), I sold my soul to him, he is the ruler of my territory. I have no clue which character type that basketball idiot is, other that being a perverted moron, but I love him so he need to be here.

Now that I build by beautiful Harem I need to make sure other get a headache…
Since I didn’t keep track of who were tagged, if you were already tagged, I apologize in advance

Here the poor souls I decide to tag, of course it’s not an obligation to do but that would make me extremely happy!

Mel Interview Pervy-Mel

Hi everyone!
I’m your host Mel and today I receive a very special guest in AnimeLand
Please welcome one my favorite fan fiction writer, Pervy-Mel.

Hi everyone!
I’m very happy to be here with you.

We are also very happy to have you with us.

Without any further delay, let’s start the interview!

When and why did you start writing fan fiction?
I started writing fan fiction in the beginning of last year, I don’t clearly remember why, but it’s most probably following a conversation with friends online.

So it’s still recent…
Yes! I have to say there is time when I look at the stories I have written so far that I’m amazed by what I wrote.

Why is that?
I seriously never thought I would write fan fiction, in fact if you were asking me to write a fan fiction a few years before, I would have probably laugh and decline. Even more concerning the more mature story.

Is there any reason why you didn’t wanted to write before?
Before I was doubting of my English writing skill, I thought it wouldn’t be good enough to write long stories, people will mostly criticized my stories not on what I write but how I wrote it.
Plus as you probably know, most of my story are for a mature public and to be honest I always considered BL and Yaoi stories as a guilty pleasure. Not that I’m ashamed to write those kind of story but more shy.

Are you proud of what you accomplished so far?
Yes of course, to be it was quite a challenge to even begin to write since the first story I wrote is not a story for underage people.

And no one criticized you so far? After more than a year of writing?
No, I even had good comment about the few I posted on an other website. One comment particularly made me smile, cause even if they hate the fact I killed one character to write the fanfic, they still like it.

Do you like having those kind of comment?
Of course, even if in the beginning I was mostly writing for me and my friend, having good comment from stranger it feel nice. I like them more since I wasn’t confident about it.

You mentioned you were posting your fan fiction on an other website?
Although I’m lucky to be able to post my writing here on your blog, Mel, I decide to test the water and see what total stranger would think about my story. This is why I created an account on Archive of Our Own. I don’t have as much as story posted there since I post here first, but there is still a few.

That is good for you to have a second place to post your story, in mean more visibility for you
It’s exactly why I decide to do it, even if it took a lot of encouragement from other, but it’s not because I have an account on another website that I will stop posting here, this blog will always be the first to have the my newest work.

Talking about new story, is there any you are working on now?
I do have a story in progress and it’s a real challenge, since I promise myself I will keep it clean of smutt

You mean no sex scene, everything PG?
No sex scene but not for everyone either *pause* guess we will see. Maybe I will still make a full smutt extra chapter since I realized that was my motivation to write, I have to live up my name after all.

Haha very true, can you tell us more about this story?
I can tell you a little bit about. The fan fiction I’m currently working on is from the series Haikyuu!! It’s a side story from a previous story I wrote “Bird of Prey” in this story one of the character, Sawamura Daichi, got hit by a volleyball during a practice, the ball was thrown at him intentionally. So the story is about Sawamura and is high-school friend Sugawara getting more than just friend. Sugawara always loved Sawamura but due to his fear to lose his friend he never told him.

That’s seems interesting, but why are writing a side story about him? Did you felt bad?
Yes, I did felt bad for Daichi, that poor boy didn’t deserve that. I just wanted to give him some happy moment after what I did to him.

You seem to really care about those fictional character, is there other fiction you wrote cause you felt bad about something you did to a character?
Yes, last year I wrote a dark fan fiction, “Unrequited Love”, featuring Kuroko and Kagami from the series Kuroko no Basuke and this story doesn’t have a nice ending. In fact I even wrote a double ending cause the first one was really tragic. After writing this story, I wanted to have a nice and sweet fluffy story for Kuroko. That’s how the series “For Kuroko” came to life, even if it become more that what it was supposed to be.

What do you mean?
“For Kuroko” is a two-part story. The first part “My Love” featuring Kuroko and Aomine, was supposed to be only a chapter long, but it became 5 chapters long. Then come “New Life” featuring Kuroko and Kagami, which is my longest fan story with 20 official chapters and an extra one. It wasn’t supposed to be that long. But when I start writing, I never know what will come up from that and which turn the story will take.

You never plan in advance?
I have a general base line, a very vague idea of what I want, but I don’t write plan about how I want the story to go. I rather let my imagination flow. There is time I write and my finger I kind of moving by themselves. That’s pretty much what happen with “New Life”. I feel like if I take too many note, I will eventually lose my interested or the note will become useless.

So none of you story are plan, you just write story the way it come to you?
Exactly, but I still edit them before publishing them and I ask feedback. The only note I take are idea for future story.

And you have a lot?
Too many idea, but not enough time to write them all

I take that as a yes. That’s probably the reason why you haven’t published anything since “New Life” extra chapter.
Exactly, but I did work on a very short story. But since it’s not even 300 word, I decide to wait before publishing it.

That’s make me really curious, maybe you could show it to us now?
…. I could yes…
*looking for the story*
Oh here it is, the piece title is :

My Reflection, My Hatred

I saw it again…

I saw it again,
In her eyes,
In her face,
In her expression
I saw it again,
I saw the fear in her eyes again, I saw her expression changing when I came close to her, softly calling her.
I saw the fear, a fear not cause by me, but by my look and I hated it.
I hate that I can’t hug her like before, I hate that I can’t call her like before without seeing the fear in her eyes.

If only I could wash it away, make it disappear.
But how, I am who I am even if I hate it,
I am the son of that man, that man who created this fear in her.
I could run away, just leave everything behind.
Leave my family, my sister, by brothers, my mom, My dear loving mom.

I saw it again,
I saw the reason why I can’t hug my mom, my dear loving mom. I saw the reason why I can’t call her without seeing the fear in her eyes.
I saw it through the reflection in the mirror.
Flamy red hair, cold teal eyes,
I saw the reason of my hatred
I wanted to punch it,
Break this reflection in pieces
Reflection that is not me.

Oh that’s is interesting, what is it about?
Since I’m feeling playful, I will only tell you it’s related to a wild theory about the series My Hero Academia.
Everyone who will find the answer will get a cookie *laugh*

Everyone if you want a cookie you need to post the answer in the comment below.

Now that we throw a challenge to the readers, let’s continue the interview shall we?
Ready!

You wrote a lot of story since last year, is there any you like more than the other? Could you give us your top three?
Hmm that’s a good question, my top three would be…let’s see…
“The Moon Watching Over the Sun”, “Goodbye Hinata” and the two parts of “For Kuroko”. Those three have all a little something more than the other.

And the hardest fan fiction to write?
“Unrequited Love” and “Bird of Prey” the former talk about rape, murder and suicide and the other about abusive relationship. While writing those I felt bad for the victim…

“Unrequited Love” is the story you wrote a second ending right?
Yes, in one ending the victim died and the murdered commit suicide and the second ending the victim survive and the assaulter vanish.

That’s really dark…
I know, I’m pretty sure sometimes my friend/reader are tempted to nickname me Bloodthirsty Mel and Grimreaper Mel. So far I killed 4 character and a dog

Ah Dog!!! You are really a horrible human
I needed his name

You are still a horrible human
Thank you

*SIGH*

…. Let’s change subject…

Beside writing fan fiction, do you read any?
I did read a few yes, so far my favorite are Rules by ConesofDunshire and Focus by ezra_mikazuki, both story can be found on Archive of Our Own

We gonna leave the link, for the reader to have access them
Great!! But little warning both story are not for reader under 18 year old

Why I’m not surprise
I like spicy story

We all like spicy story …
Perv…

At least I don’t kill dog
I needed his name

*SIGH*

Now that we are about to close this interview, which advice would you like to give to future writer
Since we are all different, I will just tell you what worked for me.
I don’t take note, I just let my finger run on the keyboard until I’m block and I don’t know what to write. When that happen, I close the page and do something else, cause when I try to figure out where I want to go with my story, I get mad and depressed, instead I wait until I get inspiration again to continue the story.
I always write for myself first, if the other like what I write it’s perfect, but if they don’t like I will not stop and thinking about why they don’t like it. If I enjoy my story, that all what matter in the end.

I think this is two really good advice. Want to give the last word?
Thank you Mel you are too nice.
Gonna take this opportunity to announced a special fan fiction project, and I will need your help to do that.
The project is related to Pokemon, what I will do is, write a story base of what happened in the pokemon video game. This mean each time I play, I will write a chapter. Why I need you help is because in the pokemon game decision need to be made, like starter pokemon and fossils to pick. Poll will be posted on twitter for you to help me to take those decision.
I’m really looking forward for your participation!

Well this is all for us!

It is time for Pervy-Mel to leave us and get back to her story

Touken Ranbu | The Struggle of the Sword Warriors

The one thing anime fan tend to look for an anime series, is the storyline, the plot. I mean that what the medium is at the first place, it telling us a story, either focus on the event or the character. Either way, what hold a series together is the story. When a series lack of a plot, when it lack of direction, a lot might lose it interest in the series. But what if the series didn’t have a general plot, where we know the direction the series is taking, where we know what they character have to fight. What if the series was offering a plot based on the struggle of the characters regardless of the environment in each they live?

That is how I see the anime series of Touken Ranbu.

Touken Ranbu is card game played on computer, developed by Nitroplus and DDM Games, it feature anthropomorphic sword forged by renown japanese swordsmith.

Their human appearance was given to them by Saniwa (The Sage) and now their new duties is to protect History against the Time Retrograde Army formed by the History Revisionist and make sure History doesn’t get alterated. The game was adapted into two anime series, one produced by the studio Doga Kobo (Himouto! Umaru-chan, Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun) called Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru and the second Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu produced by Ufotable (Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, Fate/Zero). In Hanamaru we follow the daily life of the Toudan (Touken Danshi/Sword Boy) in the citadel. We are introduced to new sword(s) in each episode. In this series we have a glimpse of what is happening during the mission, but the mission is not the main focus of Hanamaru. To see them doing their duty of protecting the History, we have to watch the Katsugeki version. In this series the focus are the missions, their fights against the Time Retrograde Army, we barely see them in the citadel.

See like that, both seems great series, a funny Slice of Life, and an action oriented Fantasy and yes the series would be awesome if they weren’t missing an important element, the plot. We have a general storyline where we follow the sword fighting, we know their purpose and what they fight for, but we doesn’t have a main villain, we doesn’t know the mastermind behind the action of the Time Retrograde Army, who are the History Revisionist, and we don’t know the main reason why they are doing that. The only thing we know is that the boys have to fight this army to make sure the History flow doesn’t change and/or doesn’t get alterated.
I think this is what hurt the series the most, if both series, Hanamaru and Katsugeki, were given a proper plot the series would have probably be more successful, it would have more appeal.

This is what I was thinking until the second season of Hanamaru began.

After the beginning of the second season, I notice where the focus of both series was put on, the focus wasn’t on the event describe by the story, the focus was on the struggle the sword had to face when they were at the citadel or on mission. Protecting the History is just a background storyline giving them a goal, not the main point of Hanamaru or Katsugeki, the series are about the personal struggle the Swords Warrior have to face through the series.

The Will of Protect their Former Master

©Nitroplus / Doga Kobo

In the first season of Hanamaru (air from October 2016 to December 2016), we meet Yamatonokami Yasusada, a Uchigatana that belonged to Okita Souji, a member of the Shinsengumi. Although Yamatonokami know that his new duties are to protect the History, he couldn’t help but think about his beloved former master. The nightmare he does during the series is a recurring element. While in Yasusada deam, his former master get killed, in the reality Okita didn’t died during that raid, however he discover that he was affected by a deadly illness, tuberculosis. More than once Yamatonokami had that dream where he by Okita side, and this is why he wanted to help him during a mission where some of the swords were dispatched during the Ikedaya event.

By doing this, Yasusada risk his own existence, he is slowly disappearing from the Citadel, erased from picture and forgotten by the other Sword Warrior. However his partner, Okita’s second sword name Kiyomitsu Kashuu couldn’t let him change the course of history just like that, even if Kashuu also feel guilty for not being able to protect their master while he was the one Okita had with him at that time, he can’t let Yamatonokami change the History for the sake of their former master. Kashuu was the first sword to arrive in the citadel, he know better than anyone what are their new duties. Being the sword who was there for the longest and Yamatonokami partner, Kashuu had to stop him, even if deep inside he wanted to do the same.

Once the mission over, once the Sword warrior were back to the Citadel, Yamatonokami decide he had to become stronger, for his new master sake, but also to be a sword Okita would be proud of. When he comes back to the Citadel, a bit more than a years later, Yamatonokami is stronger and also found the reason why they have to protect History…but that will wait for the post conclusion.

©Nitroplus / Doga Kobo

Yamatonokami Yasusada wasn’t the only one in this situation, other Touken Danshi was also struggle, divided by their love of their new master and the loyalty they had for the former one

Dealing with the Past

©Nitroplus / Ufotable

Izuminokami Kanesada and Horikawa Kunihiro were two sword belonging to the Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi, Hijitaka Toshizo, both sword were also together, fighting side-by-side wielded by the skilled hand of Hijitaka. The only moment where they stop being together, was when Hijitaka died. The day before the Vice-Commander sent Izuminokami back to his family and kept Horikawa with him for his last fight, therefore Kanesada wasn’t by the side of his master when the latter pushed his last breath. I don’t know for you, but this must be one of the worst feeling in the world to not being able to protect the one who care about. Due to that Izuminokami, like Yamatonokami and Kiyomitsu, felt guilty for what happen. This guilt, Horikawa Kunihiro felt it and wanted to change it. While Horikawa do care about his new master, he loyalty to his former master and Kanesada was stronger and knowing his partner felt guilty about the tragic end of Hijitaka, he knew what he had to do, interfere with History. Horikawa defected from the second unit in order to follow Hijitaka around until his final day. What he wanted was to make sure Izuminokami stay by their former master side until the very last moment, however his plan didn’t work. This is probably cause he underestimated how Hijitaka cared about his men. You see Hijitaka asked a young man to bring back Izuminokami to his family household, not cause he didn’t want to have his precious sword with him, but because he didn’t want the young man to died in a battle, battle the former Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi knew he would lose, in other word if Horikawa had succeed to make sure Izuminokami stay by Hijitaka side, the young man would have lost his life, however the former Vice-Commander already made up his mind, which save the young man life.

Of course we are not sure if Hijitaka would have met the same end if Izuminokami would have stay by his side, but we can suppose the young man would have died and the last day of the one that was the Vice-Commander of the renowned of the special police force wouldn’t have made it through the era until now.

Izuminokami Kanesada wouldn’t have any regrets, but the History text box wouldn’t have probably not be written the same way.

Not all the sword deal with their past the same way, if Izuminokami had a bittersweet encounter with his former master, an other sword from the same unit has happy to meet his former master again, however he knew he couldn’t change the fate of the latter and he was in peace with that. Mustunokami knew it wasn’t right to change the course of History and he knew what his new duties were. He was just happy to have be able to see him once again.

Hijitaka precious sword, Izuminokami Kanesada probably found some strength in the attitude Mutsunokami had when he encounter his former master.

The journey of finding strength is a recurring theme when we look through the episode of either the Hanamaru version of the Touken Ranbu or the Katsugeki version. Becoming stronger is the reason why Yamatonokami left in the first season of Hanamaru and it’s was only the resolution the other sword of Okita Souji had made.

Kashuu Kiyomitsu was like Yamatonokami Yasusada the Uchigatana of Okita Souji who was intstrutor in the special police of Kyoto, the Shinsengumi. It was Kashuu that Okita took with him during the Ikedaya Inn event, he was the one by Okita side when the later fall due to his illness

Kashuu and Yamatonokami was both Okita’s dear swords, as Sword Warrior they really worked well together. When Yamatonokami left for his journey, Kashuu felt alone at first, almost every day had a moment reminding him of Yamatonokami.

Kiyomitsu was the first sword arriving to the Citadel, he waited for a long time for Yasusada to come and join him, but now he was once alone again and felt lonely even if he never really admitted. He was wondering when his partner will come back and he didn’t knew what to do in the meantime until Saniwa (the new sword’s master) decide that he will take care of the new sword arriving in the Citadel, which he did. Each time a new sword was summoned to the Citadel, Kashuu was making a tour with them, showing them everything around even if that was meaning going climbing in the mountain and avoiding lumbers throw down a waterfall.

However even if he was pleased to serve his new master, Kashuu was worried, he was wondering why Saniwa wasn’t dispatching him in mission anymore, despite the fact he was training hard every day, he was scared to be abandoned like he was before. He was wondering what was his worth if he was no use to their master. However the reason why Saniwa decide to not dispatch him anymore and to make him responsible of the new sword was because he was stronger than the other, not necessarily as a swordsman, but also as a leader. Saniwa decide to dispatch the other sword instead of Kashuu until they catch up on him.

Knowing this Kashuu was relieve, he knew the master will not discard him and he knew he cared about him. He didn’t have to struggle against his fear to be abandoned, he knew it wouldn’t happen.

All the swords living the Citadel have their own background story, each have their own fear and struggle coming from their old life. Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru and Katsugeki might not have a storyline to make cohesive series, but each sword have its own story and I think this what old the show together. And when we think about it, they do have a goal, one goal. Protecting History, protecting it’s event to make sure no one forgot about it, no one forgot about what happen and who was there when it happen. Just imagine the chaos that would happen if people could change the course of History as they please.

While fighting against themselves, against their fear, while overcoming their struggle, those sword are protecting the memories for their former master.

The Touken Ranbu anime franchise might the have the conventional plot and story development other action/fantasy series or slice of life have, however it surely carry a story, a story tell by its characters, character who have to find their own to become better.
