The Great War finally came to an end after four long years of conflict; fractured in two, the continent of Telesis slowly began to flourish once again. Caught up in the bloodshed was Violet Evergarden, a young girl raised for the sole purpose of decimating enemy lines. Hospitalized and maimed in a bloody skirmish during the War’s final leg, she was left with only words from the person she held dearest, but with no understanding of their meaning.

Recovering from her wounds, Violet starts a new life working at CH Postal Services after a falling out with her new intended guardian family. There, she witnesses by pure chance the work of an “Auto Memory Doll,” amanuenses that transcribe people’s thoughts and feelings into words on paper. Moved by the notion, Violet begins work as an Auto Memory Doll, a trade that will take her on an adventure, one that will reshape the lives of her clients and hopefully lead to self-discovery

Gonna be completely honest with you, if someone would have suggest me to read the light novel, I would probably say not, that is not my type of book, the only reason why I decide to check out the anime series was the visual, it’s probably a good thing it was Kyoto Animation who adapted this one cause this studio knows how to make everything look gorgeous.

The series follow Violet who was a war children, she was used as deadly weapon and knew nothing outside of the war until the one who was her “owner” died on the battlefield and that she lost her two arms in the same fight.
After she gained prosthetic arms (think of Ed Elric automail if you saw Fullmetal Alchemist) and her injuries are healed, Violet need to move on in her daily life, trying to live like a normal human being, which is of course really hard for her, she is blunt and speak her mind without any filter. She doesn’t know there is thing she can say might hurt the other or get her into trouble, she can’t read people emotion since she doesn’t know what emotion and feeling are.

Despite the fact she can interpret people emotion, she decide to become a “Doll”, someone who wrote letter for those who can’t. However, not everyone can be a doll, you need to be able to get what people feel and what to see even if they don’t say it out loud.
Violet will work hard and through her different assignment, she will discover what is it to be human, what is sadness, what it’s mean feeling lost but above everything what “Love” mean.

It’s a slow pace series, you need to patience while watching it, don’t expect Violet to become the most empathic person on Earth in a matter of one or two episode. Talking of empathy, hope you don’t have too much in reserve cause you might need a complete box of tissue.

I said it in the beginning, this is not the type of series if it’s not sell really well to me, Kyoto Animation managed to convince me to watch it and I don’t regret it, while I was bored during some moment to the point where I seriously was thinking to drop it, I’m glad that I decide to keep with it just for the sake to see Violet being free of her past ghost.

That being said, will I recommend it to anyone, not really simply cause of the type of series that it is. If I know the person like slow pace title that have a lot of emotion and beautiful landscape, I will recommend it, but if the person just want to try something new, not too sure Violet Evergarden is the best series to broaden horizon.
